Cincinnati Leadership Summit a success

After the huge win in Cincinnati earlier this month when opponents withdrew a discriminatory ballot measure due to signature-gathering fraud, lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocates gathered Aug. 24–27 in Cincinnati for the Leadership Summit, co-sponsored by the Task Force and Citizens to Restore Fairness.

Celebrate Labor Day weekend at Provincetown Clambake!

As summer runs down to its golden last days, the Task Force is hosting its annual Provincetown party this Sunday. Unlike the past, this year we’re doing a clambake!

Please join us at the end of MacMillan Pier right in the heart of P-Town from 7:30 to 11 p.m. for fine food, good company, the magnificent vocal jazz stylings of Suede and the humor of Varla Jean Merman and Miss Richfield. We thank these three fine performers for donating their time and talent to the event and thank all of you for supporting the Task Force.

Associated Press story uncovers an "invisible epidemic" of domestic violence in the LGBT community

An Aug. 26 Associated Press story titled "States address 'invisible epidemic' of gay domestic violence" featured quotes from Clarence Patton, acting executive director of the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, and Task Force Executive Director Matt Foreman, among others. The article received widespread attention and was picked up in more than 1,000 publications nationwide.

“There is enormous stigma attached to all domestic violence, but if you are a gay man and want to talk about it with friends, they will say, 'Why didn't you hit him back?' or 'How come you can't protect yourself?'” Foreman said. “And since women are perceived to always be the victim of domestic violence in heterosexual situations, there is a stereotype of, 'How could two women be living in a domestic violence situation?'” — Matt Foreman, as quoted by the AP.

Early-bird registration for Creating Change 2006 ends Aug. 31

Join us for the nation’s premier lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender organizing conference! Register by the early-bird deadline and save up to $100. Sponsored by the Task Force, the 19th Annual Creating Change will be held in Kansas City, Mo. The five-day conference, to be held at the Westin Crown Hotel from Nov. 8–12, boasts accomplished plenary speakers and a multitude of skills-building sessions.

PROMO, our capacity building partner in Missouri, hosted its annual Equality Summit this past weekend. The summit was a daylong conference with skills-building workshops, panel discussions and strategy sessions on LGBT equality issues.
