National release of Task Force report on LGBT youth homelessness
“It is a national disgrace that 20 to 40 percent of homeless youth are lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender. It is a further disgrace that federal programs that assist homeless young people have been pitifully underfunded. The Task Force calls on the president and the new Congress — as they begin this Monday to focus on the federal budget — to address the unmet social service needs of all vulnerable Americans. That means recognizing and addressing the epidemic of homelessness among lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.”

In the states: Busy season for legislative lawyersState legislative sessions are kicking into high gear. Since 2007 sessions began in the first week of January, Task Force legislative lawyers have provided state and local partners substantial bill drafting expertise, legislative strategy and other technical assistance on 23 pro-LGBT bills in 16 states. The legislative topics include nondiscrimination, hate crimes, safe schools, sodomy law repeal and relationship recognition.

National summer camp for LGBT youthTask Force state partner Triangle Foundation, in cooperation with the Task Force, National Youth Advocacy Coalition, Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays and the National Center for Transgender Equality announce the second annual Camping.OUT, open to LGBT and allied youth from across the United States. This year’s camp will be held in Michigan on Aug. 14–19. |
