Task Force mourns death of Bob HattoyThe Task Force mourns the death of Bob Hattoy, an outspoken and courageous activist and leader on behalf of HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues. He died March 3 in Sacramento, Calif. Hattoy began his political career in the late 1970s and spent the past three decades pushing for social change. His most notable work included lobbying for environmental issues in conjunction with the Sierra Club and advocating for HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues during and after his tenure as a White House staff member in the Clinton administration. |

LGBT groups condemn arrest of state leaderThe Task Force and HRC condemned the Feb. 27 arrest and detention of Nadine Smith, executive director of Equality Florida. Smith was arrested during a heated hearing before the Largo City Commission in Florida, during which the commission voted to begin the process of firing its 14-year city manager, Steve Stanton, who had recently announced plans to transition from male to female. |

Pass the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ repeal measureThe Military Readiness Enhancement Act, a congressional bill to repeal the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” ban on lesbian, gay and bisexual military personnel, was re-introduced on Feb. 28. “The current draconian, immoral military policy that allows lesbian, gay and bisexual people to serve their country only if they lie about who they are is holding America back,” said Dave Noble, the Task Force’s director of Public Policy & Government Affairs.

In the states: IowaIowa Gov. Chet Culver yesterday signed the School Anti-Bullying and Anti-Harassment Act, which requires school districts to adopt anti-bullying policies expressly protecting LGBT students. Iowa joins California, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., in protecting transgender students and becomes the 10th state to protect students from sexual orientation-based bullying. The Task Force partnered with Iowa Safe Schools and Equality Iowa to provide advice about best practices in drafting the legislation. “Looking at a sad listing for an ‘Alternative Lifestyles Student Organization’ made me worry that my brother was going to have a harder time navigating his small-town campus as a gay student. I mean, don’t all new LGBT kids deserve to have a Swarm of Dykes around to protect them? I tried to look convincing as I assured him that he would be fine, that of course gay boys have nothing to worry about in rural Kentucky.” |

Discriminated against? Tell your story!Congress is poised to introduce the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), a federal bill that would protect LGBT people against workplace discrimination. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., is part of a collaborative effort to urge LGBT people who have faced job discrimination to share their stories in order to boost lobbying efforts for ENDA and similar state proposals.
