Transgender-inclusive ENDA introduced in U.S. House Visit our ENDA Action Center now! The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., applauds today’s introduction of the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA), which would protect against workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The Task Force, the first national organization to advocate for federal nondiscrimination legislation in 1974, played a leading role in ensuring ENDA explicitly includes transgender people. Supreme Court upholds draconian restrictions on women’s reproductive freedom “With this decision, a majority of our nation’s highest court permitted itself to be a tool of the anti-choice movement instead of preserving a woman’s constitutionally protected right to make childbearing choices in consultation with family members and medical care providers. Washington governor signs domestic partnership bill The Task Force hails Gov. Chris Gregoire’s action and the tireless work of our capacity building partner, Equal Rights Washington (ERW). Over the past two years, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., has provided technical assistance, training and funding in an effort to assist ERW in strengthening its capacity and impact throughout Washington state. Oregon Senate passes LGBT-inclusive nondiscrimination legislation The Oregon Senate passed the Oregon Equality Act on April 19 by a 19–7 vote. The measure bans discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in areas such as employment, housing and public accommodations. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., which has invested substantial staff and financial support in Oregon, applauds the work of state partner Basic Rights Oregon (BRO) in securing this victory. Task Force criticizes bigoted mockery by Illinois state lawmakers considering measure related to gender identity Two Illinois state legislators last week mocked gender transitions while debating a bill designed to make it easier to secure a new birth certificate after having sex-reassignment surgery in another country. “Let Don Imus be a lesson for us all. There will be no more profit or pleasure to be gained by describing the lives of others in contemptuous and derisive terms.
