Iowa governor signs LGBT nondiscrimination billIowa Gov. Chet Culver signed a bill May 25 that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, public accommodations, housing, education and credit practices. The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., is proud to have partnered with Equality Iowa, the statewide LGBT rights group, to pass this measure. The Task Force assisted in crafting the bill’s language and provided strategy throughout the legislative process. |

National Religious Leadership Roundtable honors the memory of Yolanda KingA memorial service for Yolanda King, the eldest child of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, was held last Thursday in Atlanta. Celebrating DC Black PridePride season is under way, and over the Memorial Day weekend the Task Force had a booth at the annual DC Black Pride Expo. We handed out fans and stickers, signed up folks for the e-mail list and talked with participants about our work to advance LGBT equality. DC Black Pride is the oldest such celebration in the country, and Task Force board member Ernest Hopkins is one of the three founders of DC Black Pride. Next up: Look for us this weekend in the Detroit metro area as we celebrate all things queer at Motor City Pride on Sunday, June 3, in Ferndale, Mich. Photo credit: Alexes Anderson |
