Task Force releases comprehensive analysis of 2008 presidential candidates’ positions on LGBT issues

“The differences between the Democratic and Republican fields of candidates on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender issues are shockingly stark and profoundly depressing.”
— Matt Foreman, Executive Director, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., today released the first comprehensive analysis of the top 19 candidates for the 2008 presidency in eight key LGBT issue areas, including sexual orientation and gender identity nondiscrimination and hate crimes laws; HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment; lifting the military's ban on openly lesbian, gay and bisexual service members; and partnership recognition for same-sex couples.

Task Force denounces Congress’ failure to halt heinous abstinence-only funding

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., expressed outrage last week at Congress’ continued failure to abolish abstinence-only funding. Last week, the U.S. Senate approved a bill that reduces funding for the Bush-supported abstinence education programs by $28.5 million — the same figure the House increased abstinence-only funding by just days earlier. Widely reported scientific studies, including a recent government-funded study, have unequivocally shown the ineffectiveness of abstinence-only programs.

OutSpoken Blog: Targets of hate — lesbian and gay Latinas/os

“It is time, long overdue, for the national Latina/o community to stand up for its lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender members and support federal hate crimes legislation that includes protections against attacks committed based on the sexual orientation or gender identity of the victim. It is time that our familia makes room for everyone, where we all can live in love, in the love of familia.”
— Pedro Julio Serrano, Communications Coordinator, National Gay and Lesbian Task Force

From the Long View podcast: Not going back in the closet

In the latest episode of From the Long View: LGBT Elders and Experts Speak, Bill Serpe (pictured), executive director of SAGE/Milwaukee, speaks about how a lack of resources can affect one’s life, the challenges and importance of asking for help, the need to improve access to health care and the urgency of protecting “our treasures.” From the Long View is a five-part podcast featuring members of the first-ever National LGBT Aging Roundtable, convened earlier this year by the Task Force. Task Force state legislative director receives prestigious fellowship

Task Force State Legislative Director Kara Suffredini has been named a Wasserstein Public Interest Advising Fellow for 2007–2008 by Harvard Law School. The program brings outstanding public interest attorneys from across the country to campus to counsel and advise Harvard students about public service. Fellows are selected based on the breadth and diversity of their public interest experiences, their ability to advise students and the areas of expertise currently of interest to students.

“We are tremendously proud of Kara, and excited about the opportunity to continue our longstanding commitment to leadership development among aspiring law students committed to working on social justice issues,” said Task Force Public Policy & Government Affairs Director Dave Noble.

Task Force: Hats off to student’s courage

The Task Force tips its hat to graduating senior Andre Jackson, who got school officials in Newark, N.J., to redistribute a yearbook that included a picture of Jackson kissing his boyfriend (pictured). East Side High School officials had initially used markers to black out the photo after they deemed it too “suggestive.” After demands from Jackson and civil rights groups such as Garden State Equality, Newark School Superintendent Marion Bolden issued an apology and ordered the yearbook be redistributed with the original picture intact.

Task Force celebrates Pride in Denver & San Francisco

The Task Force celebrated Pride this past weekend in Denver and San Francisco — two of the largest Pride events in the United States. Task Force staff and interns signed up people for the e-mail list and, in San Francisco (pictured), they gathered names for the Let California Ring education campaign about same-sex marriage. The Task Force is a key leader of the California coalition. Look for us next month at San Diego Pride on July 21–22.
