Help pass the federal hate crimes bill by contacting your U.S. senator today!

The Senate might vote as early as this week on the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (LLEHCPA, now also referred to as the Matthew Shepard Act). This bill, which has already cleared the House, will authorize federal investigations and prosecutions of crimes based on a victim’s sexual orientation, gender, disability and gender identity.

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Inc., has been working to secure federal hate crimes protections for our community since the 1980s — we are very close, but we need you to contact your senator today!

Please go to our action center right now to send an e-mail or fax message to your senator.

Task Force applauds Senate panel for tough questioning of controversial surgeon general nominee

The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force applauds the questioning put forth by members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, & Pensions at last week’s confirmation hearing on controversial surgeon general nominee, Dr. James Holsinger (pictured).

Holsinger’s past writings, most notably his 1991 paper titled “The Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality,” seriously calls into question his ability to address the health needs of the LGBT community.

OutSpoken Blog: Moore sodomy and equality

“A Moore film about the anti-gay industry would inform, educate and possibly agitate millions of non-LGBT people, bringing them into close and personal contact with the hostile homo-haters we face down each and every day. ... As a lifelong lesbian activist, I know that it doesn’t always feel quite right to me when heterosexual surrogates speak on my behalf. But I can get over that quickly when the straight guy or gal says exactly what I would want to say and is heard by many more people than will ever hear me.”
