Board Biography: Sandra Nathan

Sandra Nathan is a social gerontologist, and a long time, passionate advocate for social justice and equal rights.

Professionally, Sandra has over 25 years executive level experience, which has included positions within California’s city and county (San Diego County, Santa Clara County, City of Oakland, City and County of San Francisco) governments, and national aging and human services organizations including CEO of the Richmond Community Foundation, key positions with AARP, the National Council of Juvenile and Family Court Judges, and a staff appointee to the White House Conference on Aging. She served as a Deputy County Executive for Santa Clara County, overseeing human services, public safety and criminal justice agencies and departments before her stint in philanthropy. During her tenure in local government, Sandra was very instrumental in ensuring there were effective programs and services to underserved populations, including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older adults. She also pioneered in the development of one of the first outreach programs to older adults at risk of AIDS/HIV, as well as innovative programs and services for homeless seniors.

Sandra is now Senior Vice President of the NCOA in Washington, DC with responsibility for leading the organization’s efforts to address economic security for the nation’s low income and economically disadvantaged older adults.

Currently, Sandra serves on the Board of Directors of the Greenbelt Alliance in San Francisco, California; and the SEVA Advisory Council, based in Berkeley, California. She divides her time between Washington, DC and the SF bay area.
