Transgender Civil Rights Project Director

Lisa Mottet joined the Task Force staff in 2001 as the legislative lawyer for the Transgender Civil Rights Project, thanks to a two-year grant awarded by Equal Justice Works.

A graduate from Georgetown University Law Center, Mottet held the nation's first legal fellowship specifically aimed at addressing discrimination against transgender people on a national level. At Georgetown, she served as an editor for the Georgetown Journal on Gender and the Law.

Before law school, Mottet was a board member of Equality Washington, a statewide LGBT political organization, serving on the legislative committee. She also served on the campaign committee for Washington's proactive statewide initiative to ban employment discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

In her position as Transgender Civil Rights Project Director, Mottet works on the full range of laws and policies affecting transgender people. She has co-authored three publications while on staff at the Task Force: Transitioning Our Shelters: A Guide to Making Homeless Shelters Safe for Transgender People; Opening the Door to Transgender-Inclusion: The Nine Keys to Making Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Organizations Fully Inclusive, and Injustice at Every Turn: A Report of the National Transgender Discrimination Survey.

Mottet is a graduate of the University of Washington and is in the Task Force's Washington, D.C., office.
