In an effort to win more votes for George W. Bush and other Republicans in the 2004 election, conservatives marketed false anti-gay claims to black voters in swing states.
- An automated telephone message that called voters in predominantly black cities like Detroit and said, “When you vote this Tuesday, remember to legalize gay marriage by supporting John Kerry.”
- Propaganda in Oregon that claimed that if the anti-gay marriage amendment failed, “gay and lesbian sex [would] be taught in Oregon schools.”
- The Republican parties of West Virginia and Arkansas distributing fliers stating that liberal politicians were planning to ban the Bible and legalize same-sex marriage.
