From wrongs to rights: 1973 to 1999: Public opinion on gay and lesbian Americans moves toward equality
Report Type:
Report
Date:
November 30, 1999
Looking at the years 1973 through 1999, it is clear to see a growing majority of the American public supports lesbian and gay equal rights.
Though the majority of Americans support:
- Employment and housing non-discrimination;
- Gays in the military;
- Tangible benefits that accrue to married couples.
They still oppose:
- Same-sex marriage;
- Adoption.
Despite what the anti-gay right wing claims, mainstream America can be an ally to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights movement.
