Of the estimated 1.6 million homeless American youth, between 20 and 40 percent are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT). Homeless LGBT youth are at risk not only on the streets, but in the shelter system as well. (Prereleased to New York City press December 20, 2006.)
Transgender people are disproportionately represented in the homeless population because of the frequent discrimination they face at home, in school and on the job.
Transgender people and issues are core to our work at the Task Force. We are proud of our history as one of the first national LGBT organizations to include transgender people in our mission, starting in 1997.
